Tottenham signing Jack Clarke set to compete for first-team role after £8.5m transfer

Tottenham are hopeful of making Leeds winger Jack Clarke their first signing since January 2018, with talks ongoing for the teenager.

Although a fee is yet to be agreed, discussions between the clubs are progressing and a deal could be reached at around £8.5m, plus add-ons.

Clarke is expected to compete for a place in the Spurs first-team this season, despite Leeds’ suggestion that he returns to Elland Road on a season-long loan deal.

The forward made 25 appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side last season, with 20 coming from the bench and he scored twice and registered two assists.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, a protege of Bielsa, wants to boost his options in attack, particularly with Fernando Llorente expected to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of June.

Clarke’s arrival would mark a return of Spurs’ transfer policy of signing the best young players from the Football League, which is favoured by chairman Daniel Levy.

The likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Dele Alli have all joined the club from the Championship.

Spurs are continuing to work on a deal for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele after making the France international their top priority for this window.
