Tottenham 'set to reach agreement' on cut-price Mathys Tel signing to start Thomas Frank era

Tottenham are reportedly set to bring Mathys Tel back to the club on a permanent deal.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Spurs from Bayern Munich, scoring three goals in 20 appearances under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs had an option to make that deal permanent for £45m but have been in talks with Bayern to try and negotiate a lower fee.

According to Bild, that has been successful and Tel is expected to complete a move to north London for around £30m.

It is believed that Tel has also agreed contract terms with Spurs and a deal will be wrapped up once the two clubs reach a final agreement.

Tel will hope to play a significant role under new manager Thomas Frank, who has now arrived at the club along with several of his backroom staff from Brentford.

Frank could be followed to Spurs by Bryan Mbeumo, with the north London club emerging as contenders to sign the 25-year-old.

Manchester United were leading the race and have had a bid of around £45m plus £10m in add-ons rejected.

However, Frank wants to sign Mbeumo and Spurs have registered their interest in the forward, and have the advantage of being able to offer Champions League football to him.

Speaking last month on Mbeumo’s future while he was still Brentford boss, Frank said: “I know that Bryan is very happy being here at Brentford, he’s thriving, doing well and playing fantastic. What happens in the future? I don’t know.

“I’ve said many times: we are a selling club. But at the same time we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world who aren’t selling clubs.

“So, of course, if the right price - and that’s going to be expensive - is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open for it.”
