Tottenham set to discuss proposals for Bill Nicholson statue and iconic White Hart Lane gates

Tottenham Hotspur are set to discuss proposals for a statue of Bill Nicholson and the repurposing of the iconic White Hart Lane gates at the first meeting of the new fan advisory board in July, football.london understands.

The fan advisory board will be made up of 10 members, including one season ticket holder of the men's team, one of the women's team, a One Hotspur member, a representative of international official supporters’ clubs, one of domestic official supporters' clubs, two representatives of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, a representative of the Proud Lilywhites, one from SpursAbility and another from Spurs REACH.

The club will be represented on the board by executive director Donna-Maria Cullen and head of supporter engagement Levi Harris, while chairman Daniel Levy, other board members and senior club staff are expected to attend selected meetings.

The remit of the new board will include non-playing matters such as Spurs' strategic vision and objectives, off-pitch performance updates, priorities and plans, operational matchday issues, proposals relating to significant changes to club heritage assets, stadium issues and plans, the club’s community strategy, its equality, diversity and inclusion commitments and plan for broader supporter engagement.

In terms of heritage assets, football.london understands that the club is set to propose the topics of a statue of the legendary double-winning Spurs manager Bill Nicholson and the repurposing of the iconic White Hart Lane gates for discussion on the agenda of the first meeting in July.

Tottenham announced back in 2010 that they would be commissioning a statue of their most successful manager, who passed away in 2004, to be positioned between the gates, as he was famously photographed standing, set between the listed buildings that would sit alongside their planned new stadium.

Levy said back then: "This seemed an ideal way to make Bill a part of the fabric of the new stadium, continuing the memories of how much of a role he played at the current stadium and in the heritage of our club. I think it will be a much-loved feature of the new designs and fans will enjoy walking past Bill and maybe stopping for a photograph or two."

However, when the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was eventually constructed and opened in 2019, those plans seemed to disappear, with the gates put into storage and the statue no longer mentioned, leaving plenty of supporters asking what had happened.

Now it appears that dialogue is set to occur at the inaugural meeting of the new fan advisory board and hopefully two of the most iconic sights of the club's history will be seen again.
