Tottenham Hotspur have got involved in a new altercation with Argentina after coach Lionel Scaloni appeared to back out of a deal to release their players early from international duty.
Spurs had reportedly reached an agreement with the Argentinian FA to allow Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso to leave South America after the second of their three World Cup qualifiers.
This would mean that the pair miss the trip to Crystal Palace due to the 10-day quarantine ruling but could be back to face Rennes in the Europa Conference League.
But now Spurs may be without the two for up to four matches, including the game against Chelsea on Sunday, September 19, before the Carabao Cup tie at Wolves.
They aren't the only Premier League club affected by this, with Aston Villa's Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez also currently with their national team.
Speaking ahead of Argentina’s 3-1 win in Venezuela, Scaloni said: "We gave the list for the three games and there are no doubts about that.
"The players are here to play all three games.
"We never had a refusal from the clubs. We spoke and reached a conclusion that they had to come."
The 43-year-old's stance could prove to be costly for Spurs, who would've hoped to give Romero more game time following his big-money switch from Atalanta.
Lo Celso also hasn't had too many minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo and would likely feature in Europe and the cup game against Wolves.
Tottenham believed they had agreed with Argentina to let those players leave and the same applies to Davinson Sanchez, who has travelled to play for Colombia.
Should Lo Celso and Romero stay with their countries for all three international matches, then their quarantine period will likely finish just over a week before the next international break.
The Premier League issued a statement suggesting that clubs had come to the decision not to let players leave to red list countries and this could be further sanctioned in October, especially considering this situation.
Argentina face Brazil on Sunday and host Bolivia next Friday, which is just a day before Spurs' match with Palace at Selhurst Park.
