Tottenham set for transfer boost as Newcastle United are joined in race to sign Spurs defender

Tottenham Hotspur could well have a bidding war on their hands this summer with Club Brugge reportedly joining the race for Cameron Carter-Vickers.

According to Voetbalkrant.com, the Belgian giants are interested in acquiring the services of the Spurs defender.

However, they face competition in the race for his signature with domestic rivals Anderlecht also thought to be admirers, while Newcastle United have also been credited with interest.

It remains to be seen where the 23-year-old will play his football next season but it looks unlikely that he will remain in north London.

Having progressed through Spurs’ academy, he made his debut in 2016 but has only managed to rack-up three appearances since, with none of those coming in the Premier League.

Carter-Vickers has been sent out on seven separate loan deals since the start of the 2017/18 campaign having represented the likes of Sheffield United, Ipswich Town, Swansea City, Stoke City and Luton Town.

He was most recently on loan at AFC Bournemouth in the 2020/21 season and made 21 league appearances for the Cherries as they reached the Championship play-off semi-finals.

His current contract with Spurs is set to expire in the summer but it is believed that the club could trigger a one-year extension to that deal.

It means that any of Brugge, Anderlecht or Newcastle would have to negotiate a fee to sign the American international permanently rather than sign him on a free transfer.

He previously admitted that he would potentially be open to extending his stay with Bournemouth beyond the end of the season.

The defender said: “Yeah, I think, that’s a question that I’ll have to just kind of (go) deeper into at the end of the season.

“But it’s definitely something that I’m open to and something that I’d definitely be up for come the end of the season.”
