Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso must raise his game against the Premier League big boys to fill the void left by Christian Eriksen.
That’s the message from former England international Danny Mills, who does think the Argentine has what it takes to shine after making his loan move permanent – after Eriksen was snapped up by Italian giants Inter Milan.
Lo Celso had made 20 appearances in all competitions for Spurs since arriving at the club from Real Betis during the summer window.
However, in order to step into Eriksen’s shoes moving forward, the 23-year-old from Rosario must perform against the best in the division.
The comments come after Lo Celso was named man of the match against rock-bottom Norwich City last time out.
Mills told Football Insider: "He’s a good player. Undoubted ability.
"The difference is, there’s a difference between doing it against Norwich as opposed to doing it against Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Wolves, whoever it may be.
"Is he good enough to be a replacement for Christian Eriksen?"
Having arrived in London on an initial loan deal, the playmaker completed his £27.2 million transfer to Spurs earlier this week.
Jose Mourinho has made one further move during the January transfer window, too, with the signing of Dutch forward Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven.
Upon confirmation of the Lo Celso deal, a club statement read: "We are delighted to announce that we have exercised the option to convert the loan of Giovani Lo Celso to a permanent transfer.
"The midfielder has produced impressive performances after establishing himself in the team following a hip injury which restricted his playing time in the early part of his loan at the club."
