Tottenham's stance on Paulo Dybala revealed as Juventus name star in Champions League squad

Tottenham Hotspur came close to pulling off arguably the biggest deal during the summer transfer window.

Football.london revealed in July that Spurs were in discussions with Juventus about an ambitious move for Argentina international Paulo Dybala.

If not for a change of heart from the Serie A giants as well as Dybala's image rights then the Lilywhites may well have sealed a €70million deal for the 25-year-old on deadline day.

As it turned out there was to be no further arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 8 as fans had to settle for the signings of Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso - the latter on loan from Real Betis.

But will the north London outfit eventually get Dybala?

Well, our Spurs writer Alasdair Gold gave his thoughts on the topic during an Q&A session with fans on Wednesday where he said there should be cause for optimism.

"The transfer windows closed and Dybala is still at Juventus, which is good for Spurs. There were some fears that PSG might have moved for him if Neymar left.

"The Argentine has remained in Turin and he’s also in Juventus’ Champions League squad.

"The latter isn't a bad thing for Spurs as players can no longer be cup-tied in Europe, but it does mean the player is less likely to be unhappy at the Serie A squad.

"Much depends in the coming months over how much game time he gets and whether he feels a distinct background player to Cristiano Ronaldo.

"In the first two games of the Italian league season he’s been an unused substitute in the first game and got 14 minutes off the bench in the second, but that could be due to fitness issues after his later return from the Copa America in the summer.

"Spurs will be watching his situation very closely while attempting to find a solution to those messy image right issues.

"Of course if a move to Juventus interests Eriksen then, despite the Old Lady’s large number of midfielders, it's not out of the question that Spurs might be more amenable to a cut price January move for him if Dybala was coming the other way.

"Although from Juventus' point of view, they could simply negotiate with Eriksen and wait six months to get him for nothing."
