Tottenham's Ryan Mason responds to Gareth Bale questioning as new man opens up on his team plans for Southampton

Interim Tottenham manager Ryan Mason says he will pick teams to win football matches ahead of his first game in charge.

Mason took over the reins from Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese was sacked on Monday following a string on unimpressive results and performances.

Mourinho's treatment of Wales star Gareth Bale was said to be one of the final straws for the Spurs board, who were frustrated to see the on-loan man left on the bench in the 2-2 draw with Everton last Friday.

Bale and Mourinho's relationship since the winger returned to north London saw several flashpoints, with the 31-year-old's future now firmly up in the air.

And at his pre-Southampton press conference on Tuesday, Mason was asked about his plans for Bale and other marginalised players such as Dele Alli and Danny Rose.

"My job is to prepare a team to win a game of football. I know what it is like having the fans with you. I have felt it as a player – that energy is just incredible, it's so powerful," he said.

"Unfortunately, at the moment we don't have any of them in the stadium, but I want a Tottenham team to make our fans proud so they enjoy watching us.

"Football for a lot of people is everything they have in life. To watch their team play, I want them to be proud and I want them to be invested, and I want the players to feel that energy as well.

"Obviously they are not in the stadium now, but when they do come back in, this football club needs to feel that energy, That's how we work; that's who we are.

"In terms of players [I will use], all I can do is pick a team to win a football match. The group that trained today and the group that trained yesterday and the group that trained today, their attitude was excellent and over the next 12 to 14 hours the decision will have to be made."

Bale is expected to be involved against the Saints with doubts lingering over the availability of star man Harry Kane, who limped off in the final minutes against the Toffees at Goodison Park.

Rose was frozen out by Mourinho and Mason says his priority at present are those players who are available to him.

"I haven't spoken to Danny personally. He's injured at the moment and also I'm pretty sure he can't play in the Premier League," he said.

"He's not been included in the Premier League squad so that's something to be honest I've not really thought about.

"My main priority at the moment has been the players that are fit, the group that are over there trying to prepare as best possible for the game tomorrow because it's been such a short turnaround that there's not been much time for anything."
