Tottenham's role in Erling Haaland saga explained as Jose Mourinho aims dig at Spurs players

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest on Monday, April 5.

The role Spurs could play in Haaland saga

Tottenham could yet play a big role in the Erling Haaland transfer saga this summer.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Real Madrid might need to sell Gareth Bale in order to raise funds to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker - whose representatives have already met with Los Blancos.

Madrid need to raise some money after their latest accounts showed a loss of more than £700million due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The club's president Florentino Perez is already said to be in discussions with potential investors to raise the money.

Bale has had a mixed season for Spurs, with the Welshman having a really slow start but proving his ability to the adoring Tottenham supporters in recent months.

Mourinho aims brutal dig at Spurs players

Jose Mourinho was left very annoyed at the way his side squandered a 2-1 lead against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs fell behind after Joelinton's goal in the first-half, but two quick-fire strikes from Harry Kane ensured the visitors went into half-time 2-1 ahead at St. James' Park.

The relegation-threatened Magpies equalised, though, late on as on-loan Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock took advantage of some poor defending from the Spurs defence, something Mourinho referenced when speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the draw.

When asked why his Spurs side have fallen into the nasty habit of dropping points from winning positions, a trait not commonly associated with him as a manager, the Tottenham boss simply replied: “Same coach, different players.”

Mourinho comments leave Spurs confused

Mourinho insisted Toby Alderweireld was left out of the Newcastle draw because the Belgium defender only reported to training on Saturday - something that has left personnel at Tottenham bemused.

That's according to the Evening Standard, who say that Alderweireld actually trained on Wednesday afternoon.

“They were fit, yeah, but they reported for training only yesterday,” the Spurs manager told his post-match press conference.

“They went for their national teams and they didn't make the Covid tests on time to be in the training session on Thursday, not even on Friday. They come only yesterday.”

The ex-Southampton centre-back played for Belgium in their win over Belarus on Tuesday in Leuven but then travelled back to London the following morning.

Spurs moved up to fifth with the point, level on points with sixth-placed Liverpool, but missed the chance to move into the top four.
