Tottenham's 'perfect' midfield trio have taken Jose Mourinho's side to the next level

Dimitar Berbatov has praised Spurs midfielders Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele for their part in the club's brilliant start to the Premier League season.

Spurs are currently top of the league on goal difference, level on points with second-placed Liverpool and seven points clear of bitter rivals Arsenal, who sit in 12th.

Most of the credit for the club's fast start has gone to the formidable attacking partnership of Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, but Berbatov believes that the midfield three should also receive plaudits for their role.

Tottenham vs Chelsea - Head to head

He began by singling out summer signing Hojbjerg for special praise.

"I think one of the major things in the Spurs team, from what I have seen so far, are the people in the middle of the park," the former Bulgaria international told Betfair.

"Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a ******* bully, a rock in front of the defence. He knows what he can and can't do and he's playing to his strengths. He doesn't really get much praise but he's there and he's doing all the work.

"Mourinho knew exactly what he wanted when they went into the market for a midfielder, and he certainly got all that and more in Hojbjerg."

France pair Sissoko and Ndombele have also featured heavily for Spurs this season, keeping things ticking in the middle of the park.

Berbatov continued: "Moussa Sissoko also plays a massive part alongside him [Hojbjerg] and it's pleasing to see Tanguy Ndombele getting more and more games under his belt.

"I don't really know what else to say about Harry Kane and Son, it's obvious they are amazing. Every player is producing great football at the moment and long may that continue.

"In the past, we've seen Mourinho favour a strong midfield, he has his own ideas about how his team should be structured and, at the moment, it's working perfectly for him and Spurs."

Tottenham continue their Premier League title charge with a tough test against cross-city rivals Chelsea, who are in similarly strong form, on Sunday afternoon.
