Harry Kane, Dele Alli or Son Heung-min? Tottenham's most important player in their squad

Alasdair Gold - Tottenham Hotspur Correspondent

There's no debate to be had here surely?

Harry Kane is probably Tottenham's one world class player and without his goals in recent seasons the north London oufit wouldn't be anywhere near the top four.

You could argue that without others like Christian Eriksen, Kane wouldn't score as many but the poor Premier League results last season after Kane's second ankle injury of the campaign showed how much Spurs rely on him when it's the business end of the season.

Kane carves out a big chunk of his goals through his own strength and movement and he knits together Spurs' play up front as well. He's up there with the team's best passers in the final third as well.
Take a world class striker out of your team and, other than those three Champions League matches when the team gave everything without him, you're going to struggle.

Lee Wilmot - Audience Editor

It's easy to say Harry Kane here, as he is, of course, Tottenham's talisman.

He is a world-class talent that any club in the world would like to have in their squad.

But just to play devil's advocate and not go along with the crowd, I'm going to throw Dele Alli's name out there.

Now he may not have had the best season last year, during which he had a number of injuries, and Pochettino may not know exactly how to fit him into his system, but there's just something about the talented Englishman that brings everything together.

We know, of course, that he's not afraid to put his boot in, he's more than willing to do the dirty work, too often sometimes, but the Spurs attack just looks and feels more fluid when he's in the team.

He can find space, pick passes and scores crucial goals with late runs into the box. When he is on top of his game, he is just what Spurs need.

What was missing when Tottenham took on Manchester City at the Etihad?

Pace.

Without a hefty dose of speed up front, Spurs struggled to impose themselves.

Christian Eriksen struggled to find space in a claustrophobic midfield as City pushed forward, unafraid of being caught out at the back.

Harry Kane was pushed deeper in search of the ball and to help out his overrun teammates under pressure.

Erik Lamela may have found a goal, with Lucas Moura coming off the bench to secure the equaliser, but it was the absence of Son Heung-min that left Tottenham looking toothless.

The South Korean is a footballer who keeps his opponents honest over how high they set their defensive line. Pep Guardiola might have been made to pay had he been so bold with the rapid-action wide forward on the pitch.

Spurs at their best under Mauricio Pochettino are greater than the sum of their parts, with some parts counting for more in that formulation.

Kane is the talisman who can hold up play, unleash the killer ball and score hatfuls of goals. Eriksen is the brain between the lines.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are both key to playing out from the back. Moussa Sissoko has become a fan favourite due to his qualities as a catalyst for others.

But it's Son, with the immediacy of the threat he can pose on the break, and his ability to pop up with shots from range, that might be overlooked as Tottenham's player of great importance, especially against top six oppsition.

Without him, Spurs struggle to strike out, become pinned back and lose the air their other players need to breathe in midfield.
