Tottenham's Jose Mourinho reacts as Jurgen Klopp signs new five-year Liverpool contract

Jose Mourinho has said that Jurgen Klopp's contract extension at Liverpool is "positive news".

The big Premier League news of the day is that the German tactician has chosen to extend his stay in English football by at least another five years.

It was announced before Klopp sat down to preview his side's clash against Watford that he has put pen to paper on a new contract at Anfield until 2024.

This new deal comes six months after guiding the club Champions League glory having defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final in Madrid thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi.

He will be looking to follow that by delivering a first league title on Merseyside in almost three decades.

And he's on course to do exactly that.

Klopp's side currently sit top of the Premier League table with an eight-point advantage over Leicester City in second place after 16 games of the season and have a massive gap over defending champions Manchester City.

They're a further 23 points ahead of the Lilywhites.

Despite this and Klopp's comments that him committing his future to Liverpool is possibly bad news for their rivals, Mourinho has welcomed the fact that one of the top coaches in the world is staying put.

"First of all it means they are all happy. He’s happy, if not he doesn't sign. They’re happy, if not they don’t give him new contract," Mourinho said at his pre-Wolves press conference on Friday afternoon.

"Great news obviously for Liverpool fans, for the players because it looks clear they like each other & their relationship is very good.

"And good news for the Premier League, we want the best players & coaches and he’s one of the best.

"Positive news."
