Tottenham's Europa Conference League permutations in battle with Aston Villa and Brentford

For the second time in three seasons, Tottenham are in the fight for a Europa Conference League place on the final day of the campaign. Perhaps not the competition Spurs want to be involved in after their recent experiences in the Champions League, their dismal form over the past few months has meant that Europe's third club competition is the only one on the agenda for them heading into Sunday's clash against Leeds United.

Two years ago, Tottenham did get over the line as Ryan Mason, who was in his first spell as acting head coach, helped mastermind a 4-2 win at Leicester City with three goals in the final 14 minutes to deliver an almighty blow to the Foxes' top-four aspirations. The 31-year-old is again going to have to work his magic if Tottenham are to be playing in European competition from September onwards.

It is not in Spurs' hands, however, as Aston Villa are very much in the driving seat for seventh heading into the final day. Brentford, who defeated Tottenham 3-1 last weekend, are also in the mix for the Europa Conference League after a wonderful season in west London under Thomas Frank.

So what are the permutations heading into Sunday? football.london takes a look below.

Tottenham

Tottenham's fate will all come down to what happens in the game at Villa Park as Aston Villa take on Brighton & Hove Albion. Spurs will pip Villa to seventh if they win at Leeds and Unai Emery's side do not record a victory against the Seagulls.

As both Tottenham and Aston Villa are both on +4 in terms of goal difference, a point would be enough to see the Lilywhites qualify for Europe providing that Villa lose against Brighton and Brentford do not beat Man City.

A defeat for Tottenham, however, and there will be no European football to look forward to next season as they would not be able to finish above Aston Villa.

Aston Villa

A Europa Conference League place is very much Aston Villa's for the taking as they sit one point above Tottenham and two ahead of Brentford. Three points for Unai Emery's team will see them clinch seventh regardless of results elsewhere.

A point would also be enough for the Midlands club providing that Tottenham and Brentford do not record wins in their respective games. Villa could also lose and still qualify for the Europa Conference League as long as Spurs are defeated and Brentford do not win.

Brentford

Frank's team are very much the outsiders going into the final day, especially as they are two points behind Villa and also have to contend with the small matter of taking on champions Man City at the Gtech Community Stadium. There are always a number of twists and turns in the final 90 minutes of the season and Brentford qualifying for Europe cannot be ruled out.

The Bees must beat the Champions League finalists to give themselves a shot of Europa Conference League qualification, but then it will all come down to results elsewhere to determine their destiny. Brentford will seal a European spot if they win and neither Aston Villa or Tottenham record victories.

Their goal difference of +11 will give them the edge over Villa if they are to win and the Villans draw which would see them both finish the season on 59 points.
