Tottenham's Antonio Conte taking leaf from Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea plan repeated

It’s fair to say things haven’t gone quite how Tottenham hoped they might when Mauricio Pochettino left the club in 2019.

Neither Jose Mourinho nor Nuno Espirito Santo was able to bring Spurs back to the levels they were at under the Argentine, with both managers leaving north London with the club outside the Champions League places.

Nuno was dismissed after just 10 Premier League games in charge, having only arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers over the summer, with Antonio Conte taking his place.

Conte arrives with high expectations, having won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017, and he has already begun taking steps to reinstall one of the elements which served him well in west London.

It just so happens that this move is something he shares with former Spurs boss Pochettino as well.

Conte was known for his often gruelling training approach at Chelsea, introducing double sessions for the Blues as his team won the league in his first season but finished fifth the following year.

It was an approach favoured by Pochettino at Tottenham as well, with former Spurs defender Kieran Trippier shedding light on the punishing programme introduced by the manager, who has since taken over at Paris Saint-Germain.

And now it looks as though Conte has wasted no time getting back to one of the things he knows best.

According to the Evening Standard, Conte plans to embark on 'a number of days of double training sessions' during the coming weeks in an effort to improve his squad's fitness.

A number of Spurs' players will be away with their national sides this week, including Harry Kane and captain Hugo Lloris, but others may be subjected to their new coach's methods before others.

Vote: Should Man Utd have hired Conte when Spurs did?

Spurs will return to Premier League action on November 21 with a home match against Leeds United, followed by an away game against NS Mura in the Europa Conference League and a return to domestic action at Burnley.

Conte is unbeaten after two games in charge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but there remain questions to be answered after the matches against Vitesse and Everton.

Conte has called on his squad to work hard as he attempts to establish Spurs as top-four contenders, stressing the importance of improving their physical condition.

The former Inter boss has already won over a few players, with Sergio Reguilon among those to sing the praises of the new man in the dugout.

How Spurs' players respond to double sessions will be the next test, but the survivors of Pochettino's squads - including the likes of Kane and Son Heung-min - may already have an idea of what to expect.
