Tottenham's 2019/20 season with Jose Mourinho as boss predicted by Football Manager

It has been a tough season for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino so far.

And a humbling at the hands of Bayern Munich did not help matters this week.

The Argentinian is under pressure for the first time since the very beginning of his Tottenham tenure with questions hanging over whether he has the support of the dressing room following an unsettled summer.

According to the bookmakers, Jose Mourinho is the favourite to replace Pochettino should he leave his position, with Pochettino the third favourite to be the first to lose his job this season.

So, how would Mourinho perform as Tottenham manager?

And, would he perform better than current boss Pochettino?

We used Football Manager 2019 to find out.

Jose Mourinho as Spurs manager

Here is Jose Mourinho's profile on Football Manager 2019.

To set up this simulation, we used a fan made editor file to sort out all the latest player transfers, manager changes, promotions, relegations, cup winners and play-off winners, to make the game as realistic as possible.

The only thing that wasn't accurate is the fixture list, which is different to the 2019/20 season schedule already confirmed by the Premier League.

We then loaded up the Football Manager editor, sacked Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs manager and brought in Jose Mourinho as his replacement.

So, how would Mourinho perform in his role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

Here's what happened.

As you would expect, Mourinho's Spurs weren't exactly free scoring, with Liverpool scoring 14 more goals than them throughout the league campaign.

Goals conceded

But, they were very solid, conceding just 33 goals in 38 Premier League games.

Clean sheets

This included a whopping 17 clean sheets, a league high.

Average possession

But they didn't shy away from possession, averaging more than Manchester United and Arsenal.

Tottenham's top performers overall

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

Harry Kane had the highest average rating, which is no surprise given his goalscoring, followed by Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen,

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

Surprise surprise, Kane was the club's top goalscorer in all competitions, scoring 26 goals in 48 appearances, with Alli and Son Heung-min scoring the next most.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

Kane finished as joint-top goal scorer in the 2019/20 Premier League season, finishing level with Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

Eric Dier was a key piece in Mourinho's Spurs jigsaw, making the most key tackles in the entire Premier League.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

Eriksen also flourished under Mourinho, making the second most key passes in the division.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

And, they weren't afraid to work hard, with Eriksen and Alli both being named in the top distance covered Premier League table.

Tottenham's Premier League finish under Mourinho in 2019/20

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

Under Mourinho, Spurs managed a second place league finish, above Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester and Manchester United, but eight points behind champions Liverpool.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

In what is a bit of a shock for a Mourinho side, his Spurs outfit went out in the 1st knockout round of the Champions League, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Bayern Munich.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

They also went out in the fifth round of the FA Cup to Sheffield United. Ouch.

(Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2019)

They went further in the Carabao Cup though, gong out in the semi-finals on penalties to Everton.

Football Manager 2019 suggests that even though Mourinho could achieve an impressive second place finish in the Premier League, he would still be unable to win a trophy with this group of players, so would it be worth swapping Mourinho for Pochettino?
