Tottenham plot big-money summer transfer raids for Maxi Gomez and Luiz Felipe

Tottenham are circling £22million Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez.

The north Londoners, who are set to part company with veteran target-man Fernando Llorente in the summer, are looking to improve their options up front.

Uruguay international Gomez has scored 11 times in all competitions after netting 17 goals last term — his first season in Spanish football.

West Ham pushed for the 22-year-old in the January transfer window, with boss Manuel Pellegrini a big admirer. But Celta refused to sell as they are in relegation trouble. Gomez’s release clause - currently at £42m - virtually halves to £22m if they go down.

Celta are currently fourth-bottom, just a point above Valladolid in the last relegation spot with six games ro go, and that has brought Tottenham into the mix.

Llorente is 34 and has been a fringe player this season, making only eight starts in all competitions. Although Son Heung-min has impressed as an occasional replacement for talisman Harry Kane, manager Mauricio Pochettino wants more depth in his attack for next season.

The Tottenham boss is also interested in Lazio defender Luiz Felipe, as he looks to improve at the back.

The 22-year-old could be a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, another senior player set to leave this summer after refusing to sign a new deal.

In January, Spurs activated a counter-clause in his contract that will allow the Belgium international to leave for just £26m in the final two weeks of this summer’s transfer window.

Spurs have no option but to sell, with just a year of Alderweireld’s contract remaining.

Felipe, who is Brazilian but has an Italian passport, is understood to be valued by Rome club Lazio at around £18m-20m.

Pochettino is set to give talented 21-year-old Juan Foyth more game time next season after eight league starts so far in this campaign, with Davinson Sanchez already an established first-teamer.

Felipe could provide the depth to allow Spurs to retain the defensive stability that has kept them in the Premier League’s top four while progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals.
