Tottenham players who face an uncertain future after Eric Dier's contract decision

With the Premier League season ending on Sunday and the transfer window opening the following day, clubs have begun to turn their attention towards their summer business.

But the window is not only about incoming players - and that is particularly the case this summer.

The lockdown has had a huge impact on clubs’ finances, and many of them, including Spurs, will have to sell before they can buy.

Eric Dier had looked like a contender to be shipped out by Spurs until they confirmed on Tuesday that the England international had signed a new deal.

His contract was due to expire in 2021, and there had been whispers that Tottenham might be forced to cash in if Dier did not put pen to paper on fresh terms.

The defender has now put an end to speculation by committing to the club until 2024, but his new deal could threaten the long-term future of several of his team-mates.

Homegrown Harry Kane is the ‘special one’ for Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham

We’ve picked out four who could now be vulnerable.

Juan Foyth

Hopes were high for Foyth at the start of this season, but things have not gone to plan. That is not entirely the fault of the Argentinian, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, but Jose Mourinho does not seem to have taken to him.

As things stand, Foyth has not played for Spurs this year and well have pulled on a Tottenham shirt for the last time.

He can play at right-back but is a centre-half by trade, and Dier’s extension means it is increasingly difficult to see a future for him in north London.

His contract expires in 2022, and the club may be tempted to cash in this summer before his value plummets in a year’s time.

Foyth is a talented footballer and, at just 22, has time to improve, but he is not what you would term a typical Mourinho centre-back.

“You always want to play to feel like a player and feel good," he told TNT earlier this year. "It isn’t easy not to play either.

"But I don’t know, we have to wait for the transfer window to open. If I am going to have opportunities here, I will be very comfortable. And if they won’t count on me, the best thing will be to find another club.”

Toby Alderweireld

Alderweireld appeared to have ended discussions over his future when he signed his own contract extension back in December.

The Belgium international, who has another three years to run on that deal, hinted at the time that Mourinho was instrumental in his decision to stay.

Yet Alderweireld has found himself in and out of the team since the restart, with Mourinho often favouring a partnership of Dier and Davinson Sanchez at the heart of his backline.

Given he is already 31, time is running out if Spurs want to attract a decent fee for the former Atletico Madrid man.

And although his new contract might suggest a transfer is unlikely, Tottenham have frequently tied players down to deals in order to protect their market value. Alderweireld will certainly be asking himself one or two questions after the Dier news.

Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen was likely to leave Spurs this summer come what may, but Dier’s new contract may well be the clincher.

The Belgian has been a terrific servant down the years, but his best days are behind him and Mourinho seems to realise that.

The manager is looking to the future, which is why Vertonghen has started just once since the Premier League resumed.

The ex-Ajax man might have been handed a reprieve had Dier refused to commit to the club, but Tuesday’s announcement means he will almost certainly be plying his trade elsewhere next season.
