Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle: Hugo Lloris poor, Dier shaky, Bentancur and Kane battle

Hugo Lloris

After the Frenchman's impressive showing at Old Trafford, this game brought out the shaky side to his game. First, he charged out to get to a Newcastle through ball but collided with Callum Wilson, who then curled the loose ball over him and into the net. Then the Spurs captain misplaced a kick to Sessegnon, which ended up with Almiron running through to score. Made a good low save in the second half to deny Schar. 4

Davinson Sanchez

In for the injured Romero, the Colombian had some iffy moments on the ball in the first half but also a few moments of strong defending in both periods. 6

Eric Dier

He was so shaky in possession, kicking one early back pass past Lloris and just inches past his own right-hand post. Needs to lead that backline rather than make it shakier. 5

Clement Lenglet

Some composed moments on the ball, but also beaten a couple of times down the left far too easily. 6

Emerson Royal

Back from suspension, he provided a willing pair of legs down the right and, as often is the case, was just missing that final ball. Slotted on to the right of a back three later in the game and defended solidly. 6

Oliver Skipp

His first Premier League start since January, replacing the injured Hojbjerg, and he was up for it from the start with quick, efficient use of the ball and getting it forward. Playing down the right in one of the more advanced positions in the midfield three, he kept breaking forward and set up Son and Sessegnon for early chances. Still throwing himself into challenges in the rain in the second half and picked up a yellow card before being replaced by Lucas. A bright return on the whole. 7

Yves Bissouma

Put himself about and was better than he was at Old Trafford but hasn't yet found his rhythm at Spurs. 6

Rodrigo Bentancur

Tottenham's best player on the day. Full of energy with pressing all over the pitch, which set Spurs on a number of attacks in both halves. Gave everything and looked shattered at the final whistle. 8

Ryan Sessegnon

He had a bright start down the left, and he sent in a couple of early balls into the box before having a shot deflected wide himself. However, he faded in the game with some weaker moments on the ball and, after a yellow card before the hour mark, was replaced by Perisic. 5

Harry Kane

Put Son away early on and went on a jinking run himself in the first half that ended with a low shot saved by Pope. Grabbed a goal back for Spurs with a low header at the back post after a Son corner was flicked his way. Set up Perisic for a chance midway through the second half. Tried everything to make something happen, but there was a lack of quality around him. Now 10 goals in 12 games in the Premier League. 8

Son Heung-min

Fired three early shots at goal, one Pope held comfortably, one curled onto the roof of the net and a third that sailed over. His best effort of that period came in the 11th minute when put through by Kane, and Pope got a hand to his chip, and Trippier completed the clearance. It was his corner that was flicked towards Kane to head home. Started brightly but was still not free-flowing yet and needed to take at least one of those first-half chances. 6

Subs

Ivan Perisic

Replaced Sessegnon, but other than a couple of crosses slung into the box and one low shot from Kane's pass, he didn't add much to the game. 5

Lucas Moura

Plenty of huffing and puffing, but it contributed very little in the attacking areas. Looked rusty. 5

Ben Davies

Replaced Lenglet in the final 10 minutes. N/A

Matt Doherty

Came on down the right but didn't contribute much going forward. N/A
