Tottenham player ratings vs Ajax: Alli quiet as Eriksen and Sanchez struggle in 1-0 defeat

Tottenham Hotspur have now suffered back-to-back defeats in their brand new stadium.

Just days after losing to West Ham United, Ajax won by the same 1-0 scoreline to take a slender advantage into next week's Champions League semi-final second leg.

It could have been a whole lost worse for Spurs as the Dutch side were denied by the woodwork in the second half, but they're still in the tie and this semi-final clash is far from over.

Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen passes concussion tests after worrying head injury against Ajax

Here's how we rated the Spurs players from the first-leg.

Hugo Lloris

Sent a now almost trademark early kick to an Ajax player outside the Spurs box. Couldn't stop Van de Beek's close range opener but pulled off a big save minutes later from the same player which might prove to be important as the tie progresses. Could only watch Neres' shot roll against the post and out to safety. 6

Kieran Trippier

Played Van de Beek onside for the game's opening goal. Defended well on the whole after that, but couldn't get his eye in with crosses and set pieces before being replaced by Foyth with ten minutes to go. 6

Davinson Sanchez

The Ajax players targeted him early on, giving him no time on the ball but it was early in the second half when a sloppy ball presented the visitors with a break on goal which Rose bailed him out of. He won't remember this match against his old team-mates too fondly. 4

Toby Alderweireld

Came off better in the clash of heads with Vertonghen and headed over the Ajax crossbar towards the end of the first half. Had one loose clearance in the second half but on the whole defended well. 7

Jan Vertonghen

Had to come off after 35 minutes following a clash of heads with Alderweireld. He came back on briefly but looked in a bad way and appeared to go weak in his legs and Pochettino caught him before he was helped off down the tunnel. 6

Danny Rose

Perhaps could have got tighter to Van de Beek for the Ajax opener but he was holding the line. Got up and down the left as usual and bailed Sanchez out of a sticky situation with a great sliding clearance. Again little in the way of end product but he battled away. 6

Victor Wanyama

Like Sanchez the Ajax players targeted him early on and he lost the ball numerous times whether through rushed passing or over-running it. Not a good evening for him. 4

Christian Eriksen

Anonymous for much of the match and seemed to have an aversion to shooting at his former team's goal when he got to the edge of their box. He should be running games like this. 4

Dele Alli

Struggled to make an impact in the first half but in the second moved further upfield at the tip of the midfield diamond and had a shot blocked early in the second period and another volley which flew at the keeper. Worked hard but couldn't get the rub of the green in and around the Ajax box. 5

Lucas Moura

Kept running at the visitors as he tried to twist and turn away from them, but, like Alli and Eriksen, he struggled to present much if any end product. 5

Fernando Llorente

Headed wide from a Trippier free-kick just before the half hour mark. His movement wasn't great but he gave Ajax problems with his heading and flick ons. Started the second half well with some quick feet to carve out one chance for himself. He won plenty of flick ons but nobody was there to pick up on them. 6

Subs

Moussa Sissoko

He replaced Vertonghen and Spurs looked far better for his introduction. He flashed a shot wide of the post just before the break and caused Ajax plenty of problems, popping up everywhere. 8

Ben Davies

Replaced Rose in the final ten minutes to bring some fresh legs to the left flank. N/A

Juan Foyth

Looked composed when he came on and looked to get the ball into the Ajax box as much as possible. N/A
