Tottenham player aims dig at Liverpool following release from club academy

Former Liverpool Academy prospect Alfie Devine has aimed a dig at the Reds after scoring twice against Barry Lewtas' Under-23s side at the weekend.

Devine, who is now a Tottenham Hotspur player, was released by the Reds at the age of 11 and later joined Wigan's youth set-up.

After impressing for the Latics, the 17-year-old midfielder was snapped up by Spurs last summer for £300,000 as Wigan went into administration.

Devine became the youngest player to represent the Lilywhites in a senior game earlier this year when featuring against Marine in an FA Cup clash in January.

Currently part of Spurs' Academy system, the teenager helped Tottenham's Under-23s defeat Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday and scored both goals for his side.

Kaide Gordon had given the Reds an early lead, though Devine levelled before half-time before scoring a winner nine minutes from the full-time whistle.

Reacting to his performance on Instagram, the Warrington-born midfielder poked fun at the Reds' decision to release him as a youngster.

"It always comes back to haunt them... two goals," he wrote.

Devine has now scored three goals in four Premier League 2 appearances so far this season as he continued his impressive start to the season for Spurs.

Saturday's defeat has left Liverpool's Under-23s seventh in the league standings, with Tottenham now in fifth.
