Tottenham outline plan for new head coach search after Thomas Frank sacking

Tottenham will hire an interim head coach until the end of the season before appointing their next permanent manager in the summer.

Standard Sport understands Spurs are confident they will have an interim appointment in place in time to take training on Monday.

It comes after the Spurs board sacked Thomas Frank following eight months in charge after Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle left them 16th in the Premier League and only five points above the relegation zone.

The Tottenham hierarchy believe appointing a new head coach in the summer will give them the best chance of securing the right candidate as the Dane’s permanent successor.

The interim head coach hired until the end of the season will be a candidate for the full-time position if they are successful in the role, it is understood.

Frank took charge last summer following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, after a settlement worth £6.7million was made with Brentford to release Frank from his contract as their head coach.

The interim head coach will need to steady the ship in the Premier League until the end of the season but will take charge of a team through to the round of 16 in the Champions League, with their form in Europe under Frank having been far more impressive than domestic form.

Tottenham said in their Wednesday morning club statement confirming Frank’s sacking that they had been “determined to give Frank the time and support needed to build for the future together”, but recent results had meant “a change at this point is necessary”.

The statement added: “Throughout his time at the club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering commitment, giving everything in his efforts to move the club forward. We would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him every success in the future.”
