Tottenham news: Jack Grealish warning, Hakim Ziyech message, Spurs transfer rumours rated

Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for their return to Premier League action this weekend as they prepare to face Aston Villa.

Spurs are due to face Dean Smith's side at Villa Park on Sunday, with both sides returning to action following their winter break, having not had a game last weekend.

The two sides are both in need of the points for different reasons, with Spurs just four points behind London rivals Chelsea in the battle to finish in the top four, while Villa are just one point above the bottom three with 13 games to play.

Spurs will be looking to improve their recent away record, having won just twice on the road in the league so far this season.

Jose Mourinho on Spurs' progress under him

But those two victories have come since Jose Mourinho took charge, against West Ham and Wolves.

Ahead of the game, we take a look at the latest Tottenham news.

Jack Grealish warning

This weekend, Tottenham are set to come up against a player who could have been playing for Spurs, had things panned out differently.

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham in the past, but has stayed put with his boyhood club, where he is now excelling in a struggling side.

Grealish has been Villa's standout performer this season on their return to the top flight, attracting attention from the likes of Manchester United, with Real Madrid and Barcelona also linked.

Many Spurs fans will think of Grealish as a case of what might have been for Tottenham, as Rob Guest explores here.

But Spurs have also been warned about the threat posed by Grealish, who Birmingham Live's Aston Villa reporter Ashley Preece says is thriving after being played in a more advanced role by Dean Smith this season.

He is certainly the one to watch for Spurs as they face Villa this weekend.

Transfer rumours rated

We may be some months away from the start of the summer transfer window, but that does not mean there are not rumours about who Spurs could sign.

Having not signed a striker in January, Tottenham are being linked with a number of forwards ahead of the summer, with the likes of Willian Jose, Olivier Giroud and Vedat Muriqi among the names that were mooted as interesting Spurs in January.

It is not just forwards Spurs are being linked with though, with Tottenham named as potential suitors for several defenders and midfielders, including a number of right-backs such as Max Aarons, Youcef Atal and Sergino Dest.

But just who could join Spurs in the summer?

We have rated the transfer rumours, here.

Van der Vaart's Ziyech message

The January transfer window may be closed, but Chelsea have already got things started for the summer by confirming the signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax.

The Moroccan international will join the Blues on July 1 after a deal was agreed between Ajax and Chelsea for him to join the Premier League side.

Ziyech had been linked with Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United in the past, and Tottenham hero Rafael van der Vaart has expressed his regret that the Moroccan is not joining his old side in north London.

Former Spurs ace Rafael van der Vaart knows all about the tricky player having watched him at Ajax and he opened up on what exactly Ziyech will bring to the Premier League and why he wanted him to head to north London instead.

"Wonderful player and great lad," the former Dutch international tweeted in reply to a question about the ex-FC Twente man. "With the right coach, Ziyech is a player who would contribute big time to many top teams in Europe.

"I believe Frank Lampard proved so far he understands creative players and understands entertaining yet effective football.

"Therefore I do see a good match between player-club-coach.

"Still a bit heart broken our MVP is leaving Ajax and Dutch football, to have seen him in a Spurs shirt would have softened my misery."
