Tottenham news: Harry Kane reveals what it will take for Spurs to match Man City and Liverpool in title race

Harry Kane admits he does not expect Manchester City and Liverpool to ease off the pace in the title race and claims Tottenham must put an incredible run together to stay within touching distance.

Pep Guardiola’s side triumphed last season with 98 points, while Jurgen Klopp’s side fell just short on 97 points but claimed the Champions League by beating Spurs in the final in Madrid.

Mauricio Pochettino is contending with an ‘unsettled’ squad, with the futures of Christian Eriksen and Jan Verthonghen still uncertain after Newcastle picked up a surprise 1-0 win on Sunday.

But Kane insists they remain equipped to challenge this season: “Yes hopefully, but it’s still going to take a lot of hard work.

“As you’re seeing ... there’s no letting up from them. I said before the start of the season that if we could put a run together ... maybe winning for two-three months on the spin without dropping points, then that’s what it’s going to take.

“It’s a disappointing start but there is a long way to go ... there are a lot of big games ahead of us.”

The north London derby with Arsenal is next for Spurs, with Kane concentrating on taking three points to go into next month’s international break on a high.

“You never want to go into an international break having lost or drawn,” the England international added.

“A north London derby is as big as it gets. If we win that it makes the first four games a bit brighter. It won’t be easy, but we have to make sure we’re prepared.”
