Tottenham news: Antonio Conte makes blunt Man Utd claim as Harry Kane's 'idol' watches

A decent performance ultimately yielded nothing for Tottenham Hotspur at Manchester United on Saturday.

As sporting icon Tom Brady watched on in the stands, Spurs were unable to cope with one on the field as Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick condemned them to a 3-2 defeat.

Tottenham were the better side for long spells of the game and looked set to take control when they twice equalised through Harry Kane and a Harry Maguire own goal.

But ultimately Spurs' hopes of finishing in the top four suffered a major blow, as the Red Devils picked up a significant three points at their expense.

Conte aims dig at United

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte believes Spurs would have got the better of United had it not been for Ronaldo.

The Portuguese was ruthless in his finishing, gobbling up the opportunities presented to him. By contrast, Spurs were profligate when they got into good areas, either snatching at openings or picking the wrong pass.

"You are talking about a player who is always decisive and has been in his career," Conte said of Ronaldo after the game.

"Tonight he showed what type of player he is. Without Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United it would have been difficult not just to win but also to draw the game."

Kane 'idol' takes in Old Trafford thriller

Back in 2017, Kane said his sporting "idol" was NFL quarterback great Tom Brady, so the England skipper would have been inspired by his appearance at Old Trafford.

The Spurs forward was a threat throughout against United, although his penalty was quickly cancelled out by Ronaldo's second goal.

Brady won a remarkable seven Superbowl titles in his stellar career, which he called time on at the end of the previous season.

He used some of his newfound free time to take in a thrilling Premier League encounter and the heroics of 37-year-old Ronaldo would have no doubt impressed Brady, who enjoyed success in the twilight years of his career.

Conte body language hint

Conte's body language in his pre-United press conference may have offered a hint into how long he wants to be at Spurs.

Press conferences have started to be held in person again across the Premier League, with the ongoing pandemic previously limiting the media briefings to virtual calls.

Matthew Dunn picked up on some interesting quirks from Conte on Friday, as the Italian answered a series of challenging questions about his contract and potential long-term future in north London.

"The overwhelming impression he left in the room was that the man who only once previously has spent more than two years anywhere, might be at Spurs for longer than anybody thought," Dunn noted.
