Tottenham name price for Victor Wanyama as talks continue with Club Brugge over late summer deal

Tottenham have told Club Brugge they will have to pay £17million if they want to sign Victor Wanyama.

Spurs are prepared to sell midfielder Wanyama, who has started just 47 Premier League games for them since joining from Southampton for £11.5m in 2016.

The 28-year-old Kenya international has been struggling with injuries for the past two campaigns and with Spurs adding club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele to the squad this summer, he is surplus to requirements.

Club Brugge have opened talks with Spurs over signing Wanyama on a permanent basis but are not prepared to pay the asking price.

Standard Sport understands they are willing to spend £8m for Wanyama at the moment, although the two clubs are still in negotiations.

There is still the possibility of taking Wanyama on a season-long loan, although his £65,000-a-week salary is set to be another stumbling block for the Belgian club.

Should it be a temporary switch, Brugge will ask Spurs to pay some of his wages. If the two clubs manage to agree a permanent option, Wanyama is likely to have to take a pay cut.

While English clubs can no longer buy players, they can still sell talent abroad because the transfer window in other countries closes later.

Belgium’s transfer window ends on September 2, so there is still plenty of time for an agreement to be reached for Wanyama.

Any deal for the player could all depend on whether Club Brugge secure the financial boost of reaching the group stages of the Champions League.

They won the first leg of their play-off against Austrian side LASK Linz 1-0 on Tuesday night. The second leg takes place next Wednesday.
