Tottenham must not repeat Jose Mourinho mistake as Nuno Espirito Santo comparison made

There are some similarities between Nuno Espirito Santo's post match press conferences and what Jose Mourinho has recently said and what he has said in the past when he was Tottenham manager.

Mourinho was in charge at Spurs for less than two years and took them to sixth in his first season in north London and was sacked during his second season, just days before their League Cup final.

Espirito Santo came to N17 during the summer and has so far led his side to five victories and four defeats, with all of the losses coming from London derbies.

Pressure is beginning to mount on the Portuguese head coach as many fans are concerned with the stop and start nature that the season has seen so far.

The Lilywhites face Manchester United in their next league fixture, another former club of Mourinho's, where he was manager before his move to London.

Mourinho is now in charge of Roma, who are fourth in Serie A after nine games but suffered a 6-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the Europa Conference League.

Speaking to Sky in Italy, the 58-year-old gave his verdict on the defeat: "We have a very good team, we don't have a very good squad. Today [Thursday], we didn't play with the team, we played with the squad, and we were punished by that.

"If I could use the same players every match I would."

Tottenham also saw defeat in the European competition on the same day as Roma and Espirito Santo decided to leave his regular line-up in north London and start with 11 fringe players.

In his post match press conference after the 1-0 defeat, the current Spurs head coach revealed whether he thought these players took their chance to impress.

"It's about having minutes, compete, improve because like you know we have a tough, tough schedule ahead of us and we will need all the players in the best condition as possible," he said.

The Lilywhites players chosen to play in Arnhem looked like 11 individuals rather than a team, much like Mourinho highlighted after the Roma loss.

Both managers decided to rotate their squad for the European fixture, but it didn't pay off for either.

When Mourinho was at Tottenham, his side lost 2-0 to Leicester after a Jamie Vardy penalty and a Toby Alderweireld own goal.

In a game where Spurs had eight shots to Leicester's 17, they were dominated for large spells but that wasn't the overall verdict of the Portuguese manager.

"In the second half we score in our own goal when we had possession and we were in more creation," he explained.

"It looks like, with the result, the opponent was totally in control or better than us but that was not the reality."

"I agree we didn't create 15 chances in the second half but they're a good team, they know how to defend, they know how to drop the lines back and they created us difficulties with their defensive organisation," he added.

This sounds yet again familiar to Espirito Santo's verdict on the Tottenham defeat to West Ham, which was another overall poor performance from the north London side.

"The way we conceded [was what went wrong] but apart from I think that we had a good game, we had possession we had control of the game," he said in his post match press conference.

"Because West Ham defend in the box with a lot of men. There was not much space and we should've moved the ball faster and go to wide areas."

"I believe we were better team...We have enough creativity with our full-backs, our attackers," he added.

Many fans don't agree with the head coach, with Spurs not having a shot on goal in the second half and despite their 62% possession, the only statistic that matters at the end of the match is the result.

Both managers commented on the Lilywhites' ability to keep the ball and creativity, but many fans have been critical of Tottenham's lack of creativity since the departure of Christian Eriksen.

These post match press conferences show some similarities between the former and current Spurs head coaches but just four months after Mourinho's post match talk on Leicester, he was sacked.

Tottenham will be hoping this doesn't happen with the current Portuguese boss as it will be another long search for someone else to take charge.

However with more and more fans beginning to question Espirito Santo's leadership, he desperately needs to take his side on a winning run to secure his job, which starts with the Carabao Cup fixture against Burnley on Wednesday.
