Tottenham MP David Lammy rejects Spurs-Liverpool replay after VAR controversy

As MP for Tottenham, David Lammy will enter the lion’s den when Labour convenes in Liverpool next week following recent controversy on the football field.

“I’ve been in the stands and felt I’ve been robbed on a number of occasions,” the shadow Foreign Secretary told The Standard after an incorrect VAR decision helped Tottenham Hotspur beat Liverpool 2-1 last Saturday.

Choosing his words with care to avoid inflaming passions in Labour’s conference city, the Spurs fan rejected Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s demands for a replay, saying: “Sometimes the luck goes with you, sometimes it doesn’t.”

But he conceded that perhaps the use of the video technology needs reconsidering. “And actually I’ve always believed that, in a way, human error is part of the game. The debate around VAR killing some of that, I think has got merit to it.”
