Tottenham move for Gianni Vio as Antonio Conte targets Italy specialist to address set-piece weakness

Tottenham are in talks to add set-piece expert Gianni Vio to Antonio Conte’s backroom staff.

Vio has a wealth of experience and previously worked with the likes of AC Milan, Brentford and Leeds.

The 69-year-old was also on Italy’s staff when they won Euro 2020 last summer and his set-piece work has been credited as a key part of their success.

As reported by The Athletic, Tottenham are now in talks with Vio and are hopeful of adding him to Conte’s backroom team for the new season.

Vio’s arrival would be a welcome boost, with Tottenham ranking 14th in the Premier League last season for goals from set-pieces.

Conte has done an impressive job at Spurs after being appointed in November last year, guiding them to a top-four finish last season.

The Italian is now keen to kick on by bolstering his squad and adding to his backroom staff, too.

There are deals in place to bring Rangers chief scout Andy Scoulding and performance director Gretar Steinsson to the club, while Simon Davies is due to join the academy.

Spurs are working hard to add to their playing squad and have so far brought in three new faces in midfielder Yves Bissouma, goalkeeper Fraser Forster and wing-back Ivan Perisic.

Conte still wants to bring in a left-sided centre-back, right wing-back and new forward before the transfer window shuts, with talks ongoing over a deal for Everton striker Richarlison.
