Tottenham morning headlines as stadium helps NHS effort and Spurs' stance on season ending

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Thursday, April 16.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opens as NHS centre

Tottenham have become the first Premier League club to open their stadium as a coronavirus testing centre for the NHS.

The brand-new stadium, that officially opened in 2019, is using its big basement car park as a drive-through COVID-19 testing centre for the staff of North Middlesex University hospital, their families and dependents.

This is the first Premier League stadium to open up its facilities to the NHS, with more expected to follow suit now.

There will be 70 tests a day expected to be conducted between the hours of 10am until 2pm on Monday to Friday.

“We are proud to be handing over our stadium to our wonderful NHS as we fight COVID-19 together,” Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said.

“We reached out to the NHS and the Mayor of London’s Office when the pandemic first started to explore ways in which our stadium’s facilities could be of use, so we are pleased to see this now becoming a reality.

“I should like to commend staff at North Middlesex Hospital, along with our own stadium operations team, who have worked tirelessly over recent weeks to find solutions to transform our stadium for such a vital case.”

Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea push to get season finished

Multiple Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, are desperate for the 2019/20 season to finish by June 30th, despite the campaign being postponed indefinitely.

Football across the UK is currently on pause for an indefinite period of time due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the future of the season still remains unclear.

The Premier League and Football Association are both determined to conclude the season by extending it into the summer months.

However, the Mirror reports that at least nine top-flight clubs have considered that extending it into the summer will cause “huge uncertainty and utter chaos”.

Rather than writing the season off altogether, these clubs are keen to find an idea where the season can run its natural conclusion, with relegation, European spots and the title yet to be decided.

Greaves recovering at home following hospital release

Tottenham legend Jimmy Greaves is recovering at home after spending time in hospital after fears a stroke from 2015 had worsened.

Greaves was rushed to hospital last week, but was released last night, his son Andy has confirmed to supporters.

“Mum was delighted to welcome Dad home last night and we can’t thank the doctors and nurses, and all the NHS staff who cared for him, enough,” Andy said.

“He hasn’t been a well man for some time but the way he keeps fighting everything that comes at him continues to make us proud.

“As well as those who have cared for Dad in the past week, and in the past five years, we would like to thank the public for their support.

“Dad has been touched by the messages we have been able to pass on – it means a lot to him and to us as a family.”

Greaves scored 266 goals in 381 games for Spurs, and also scored an incredible 44 goals in just 57 games for England.
