Tottenham morning headlines as Spurs tipped to rival Liverpool, Dele Alli concern

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Tuesday, 22 September.

Former Spurs keeper backs front three to rival Liverpool

Tottenham fans have had a pretty good weekend, with the return of Gareth Bale followed by an eye-catching five-goal display away to Southampton.

It made up for the blunt performance at home to Everton in Spurs’ Premier League opener, and Bale’s arrival in particular has people dreaming big.

One of these people is Paul Robinson, who was Spurs’ goalkeeper when Bale first joined from Southampton in 2007.

The former England No.1 knows a fair bit about the Welshman, who rejoined on loan from Real Madrid, and has made a bold claim about Bale’s impending link-up with Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

Jose Mourinho hails Bale 'top player in Europe'

“When you throw Gareth Bale in with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, you have a front three there that rivals anyones in the Premier League,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“We talk about the front three that Liverpool have got and the front three that Manchester United have got – Kane, Son, Bale when fully fit can rival Liverpool and any team in the Premier League.

“A fit Gareth Bale, whether it be with Kane, Son, Moura or Bergwijn, is a mouthwatering prospect. Really, really clever, outstanding signing from the club.”

Alli should be worried by one Mourinho trait

Dele Alli featured relatively regularly under Jose Mourinho last season, enjoying his best minutes-per-goal record in the Premier League since 2016/17.

However, after just two games of the new season, there are concerns about the England midfielder’s future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Alli was left out of Mourinho’s squad for the victory at Southampton, prompting talk of a departure if Spurs receive a suitable bid.

Anyone who has watched any of the All Or Nothing documentary will have noticed the complicated relationship between the player and Spurs’ manager, but Mourinho has shown plenty of times that patience isn’t something he is known for.

football.london has taken a look at the interactions between the two, and explained why Alli should be worried on the basis of the manager’s previous form.

The truth about Spurs’ interest in Weghorst, Lingard, Sorloth and more

Tottenham have been linked with a number of players throughout the transfer window, and a number of the targets have already been snapped up.

After the arrival of Matt Doherty, Joe Hart and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before the start of the season, Bale and Sergio Reguilon completed their moves from Real Madrid over the weekend.

At this stage, it appears a striker is the main target, to help remove some of the strain on Harry Kane in what promises to be a long and busy season.

Wout Weghorst, Alexander Sorloth and Rhian Brewster are among the names mentioned in relation to the No.9 role, while elsewhere there have been reports of interest in Manchester United midfielder and one-time Jose Mourinho favourite Jesse Lingard.

In a Q&A, football.london’s Rob Guest has answered some of your questions about Spurs’ transfer business.
