Tottenham morning headlines as Mourinho targets Barcelona midfielder and Premier League verdict

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Sunday 26 April.

Mourinho ‘sets sights’ on Rakitic transfer

Tottenham have joined the race to land midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who looks set to leave Barcelona this summer.

That is according to a report in Catalan newspaper Sport, as cited by the Daily Mail.

It is claimed that Mourinho wants to land the Croatian international - who is out of contract at the Camp Nou in the summer of 2021, with the club likely to cash-in this year.

Spurs' bid for Rakitic could be aided by Barca's reported interest in Tanguy Ndombele, who is unsettled at the Premier League club and there are even suggestions that a swap deal may be possible.

Rakitic has made 299 appearances for Barca in all competitions, scoring 35 goals with Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Sevilla and Napoli among the clubs linked to his signing.

Spurs spree funded by Kane sale?

There have been fresh suggestions that Tottenham may cash-in on star striker Harry Kane this summer.

The England international has a £200million asking price and with Manchester United and Juventus both linked, he could help to fund a spurge on Spurs transfer targets.

It could allow boss Jose Mourinho to attain his transfer targets, backed by club supremo Daniel Levy.

Norwich defender Max Aarons and Athletic Club Bilbao centre-half Unai Nunez could help rejuvenate the Spurs back-line, which has proved particularly porous this season.

Thomas Partey - linked strongly to Arsenal and Manchester United - could also be a significant addition in midfield while RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, mentioned in relation to Chelsea and Liverpool, could prove to be a direct replacement for Kane.

Another potential target is South Korean international Hwang Hee-chan of RB Salzburg.

Premier League could follow Dutch precedent

The Eredivisie confirmed an end to their 2019/20 season recently and on Friday confirmed there would be no champions for the campaign alongside no promotion or relegation. However, it is the awarding of European spots that have proved contentious and this could impact upon Spurs in the Premier League.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are all involved in a frantic race for the European spots in the Premier League, with both Champions League and Europa League places up for grabs.

KNVB chief Just Spee told the BBC: "I do know that what is true for us, we are footballers we want to play, is true for all of my colleagues around the continent.

"And in the UK it is not different. So they will hold onto a sliver of hope as long as it's there. But again, we've seen how this develops. Is it realistic? In the end it probably will not be but we'll see.

"To be honest, seeing what is happening and seeing that things get postponed week by week by week, how realistic is it that within the next three or four weeks we will come to a different conclusion? Not so much I believe.

"And also the Premier League will need a number of weeks to complete their competition. Is there going to be enough time for that? Doubtful, very doubtful."
