Tottenham morning headlines as Mourinho faces Willian dilemma, brutal Trippier injury criticism

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Sunday, May 31.

Mourinho must sell for Willian

Jose Mourinho wants to be reunited with his former Chelsea star Willian but he must sell first before landing the winger.

As outlined by the Daily Star, Spurs have a surplus of wide players and must sell before they can bring in the Brazilian and his £120k per week wages.

Erik Lamela is said to be one of the players most likely to make way should the club move for Willian, who has starred across London since his 2013 switch to Stamford Bridge.

Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura, Ryan Sessegnon, Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko are other players who can operate on the flanks, meaning that squad restructuring may need to take place.

Willian is out of contract at Chelsea this summer and has been strongly linked with a move to North London while Lamela, who has made 146 league appearances for Spurs, could command a £20million fee.

Trippier blasts Spurs on surgery

Former Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier has hit out at his former club for their handling of his groin injury last season.

The England international claims he was pressured to not undergo surgery during his final campaign in North London, ahead of his £20million switch to the Spanish capital last summer.

The 29-year-old claims his current side suffered as a result and he had to miss seven games for Atleti this season to rectify the issue, including the 1-0 home Champions League Round of 16 win over Liverpool.

Trippier said, as cited by The Mirror : “I certainly feel I am a better player than I was last season at Tottenham. Last season was a difficult moment because I was struggling with injuries.

“It is not an excuse because I was not hiding about it.

“But I struggled for months with my groin and pelvis and I eventually had surgery just after the winter break in Spain in January.

“Because of the timing of the break and the operation I was only out for a few weeks and now I feel so much better.

“I should have had it last season at Spurs but people didn’t want me to have it then. I had so many issues with the last season there and about the way I performed and struggled with injuries.

“It got to a point where I had to have surgery this season and really I should have had it done last season.

“But there were so many important games... I don’t really want to go into it.”

Hits and misses for Spurs youth stars

There is a great deal of excitement around Tottenham’s teenage striker Troy Parrott who has the potential to become a star at the club.

However, as outlined by football.london there have been a number of similarly highly-rated youngsters at the club in recent years and not all have gone on to be a success.

Of course, Parrott’s biggest inspiration is likely to be striker and captain Harry Kane, who is the biggest youth team success at the club since Sol Campbell in the 1990s.

It is highlighted that young promise is not always fulfilled - such as the club’s youngest ever player John Bostock, who is now aged 28 and spent most of the season at Nottingham Forest.

There is also the case of Reto Ziegler - a first-team regular for Spurs in 2004/05 aged 18 but whose position was then filled by Gareth Bale and who never fulfilled his early potential.
