Tottenham morning headlines as Matt Doherty transfer fee revealed, £20m Sergio Reguilon battle

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Monday, 31 August.

Spurs face competition for Reguilon

Tottenham Hotspur are set to face competition from Manchester United, Juventus and Inter Milan for Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, as per Marca.

Reguilon has attracted attention this summer following an impressive stint on loan at Sevilla, with whom he won the Europa League.

However, the 23-year-old is not guaranteed regular starting football at Madrid with Zinedine Zidane preferring Ferland Mendy and Marcelo in that position.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho hopes to further strengthen his defensive options after securing the signature of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matt Doherty.

Madrid will demand around £20million for Reguilon.

Spurs landed Doherty bargain

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy managed to negotiate a bargain £13.4m fee for Doherty without add-ons, as per football.london’s Tottenham correspondent Alisdair Gold.

Doherty became Tottenham’s third signing of the summer when he joined on a four-year deal on Saturday, following Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart to the club.

Doherty, who played over 300 games for Wolves, will link up with the Republic of Ireland ahead of their Nations League double-header against Bulgaria and Finland.

The 28-year-old should be available for Spurs’ Premier League opener against Everton on September 13.

King can challenge Kane for starting spot - Bent

Former Spurs striker Darren Bent believes Josh King can challenge Harry Kane’s position in the Tottenham side should the Bournemouth man complete a move to the north Londoners.

According to talkSPORT, the Norwegian striker’s representatives have held talks with Spurs over a potential move following Bournemouth’s relegation to the Championship.

And Bent believes the 28-year-old has the ability to cause Mourinho a selection headache despite Kane’s importance to Spurs.

"Callum Wilson must be gutted that Josh King has hijacked his transfer move," Bent told talkSPORT.

"I like it. You can tell that he has a lot of ability. He can score goals and he can create goals. He has all the ability.

"I think if he is happy to go to Spurs and to fight Kane for that number one spot then well played to him. He is good enough."
