Here are the Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Saturday, August 29.
United wanted Spurs target Doherty
Manchester United made an enquiry to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers wing-back Matt Doherty last summer, according to reports.
The Republic of Ireland international is on the verge of joining Tottenham this summer but a report in the Daily Express, via the Daily Mail, claims Doherty was on United’s shopping list a year ago.
That was before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side clinched a move to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, although no reports at the time had linked Doherty with a switch to Old Trafford.
Doherty is now set for a move to Jose Mourinho’s Spurs squad.
Encouraging moment for Tottenham fans
Spurs ran out comfortable 4-1 victors over Reading in a friendly on Friday, but fans will have been equally encouraged by the instructions being handed out from the bench.
Mourinho’s assistant head coach Joao Sacramento was frequently shouting at the team’s attacking players to press opposition defenders throughout the game.
football.london kept an eye throughout the game, with Mourinho and Ledley King even joining Sacramento in the instructions, leading to an impression that Spurs may be hopeful of replicating a style introduced by Mauricio Pochettino.
The Argentine’s game was based on pressing opponents and playing high up the pitch, with football under Mourinho last season usually more reserved.
Barcelona player eyed by Spurs - report
Lucas de Vega has returned to Barcelona following a season-long loan at Cartagena and Tottenham are reportedly among the club’s interested in his signature.
Spurs are said to be monitoring a move for the 20-year-old alongside Spanish second division sides Sporting Gijon, Tenerife and Malaga, as per La Verdad via Sport Witness.
The midfielder could be on his way to north London next season to bolster Mourinho’s squad.
