Here are the Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Tuesday, September 1.
Robinson hails Doherty signing
Paul Robinson believes the signing of Matt Doherty solves a major problem for Spurs.
The club completed the acquisition of the right-back from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.
And Robinson thinks the £16million man will make his former club significantly stronger this season.
“Doherty is definitely an upgrade defensively,” the ex-Spurs goalkeeper told Football Insider. “What Serge Aurier brings offensively he lacks defensively.
“That has been a problem at Spurs for a long time. The manager has not been able to do anything about it until the window has opened. Jose Mourinho has been allowed to shuffle his pack and it is one of the first situations he has addressed.
“Doherty is very fit, very reliable and very dependable. A top player.
“It also gives him another option because he can play right-back or right-wing back. He is a very versatile player that can be used in two different systems.”
Winks issues update after withdrawal
Harry Winks has sent a message to Tottenham fans after withdrawing from Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
The midfielder was selected to represent his country against Iceland and Denmark in the Nations League, before pulling out for an undisclosed reason.
Winks spoke of his disappointment but didn’t go into detail, with Spurs fans left to sweat over his availability for the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign.
“I’m gutted at not being able to meet up with the rest of the squad for these international games,” he wrote on Instagram.
“It’s always such an honour to represent my country and missing out is very disappointing but it’s a must right now.
“I will be cheering the boys on from home!!”
Lloris set for new deal?
Tottenham have reportedly held early talks with Hugo Lloris’ representatives over a new contract for the goalkeeper.
The club captain’s current deal expires in the summer of 2022, when the Frenchman will be 35.
But according to Football Insider, Spurs are keen to tie Lloris down to fresh terms.
