Tottenham morning headlines as Maripan wants £17.9m transfer, Pochettino puts Newcastle on alert

Here are the Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines on Saturday, May 23.

Poch ready for Premier League return

It has been six months since Mauricio Pochettino lost his job at Tottenham - but now he is ready for a return to the dugout.

The Argentine is now being strongly linked with a move to Newcastle after their Saudi-backed takeover goes through, having previously been linked to Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Pochettino told The Sun: “Are we ready and hungry to get back to work? Yes. After six months, our tanks are completely full. Always, you dream of the perfect club. The perfect project.

"But we are a coaching staff that are open to listen to all the projects, all the people. We are learning and sharing ideas.

"You never know when it’s going to be the motivation or the inspiration to say, Oh, they are the right people, and you want to be with them or their club.

"We are very receptive to listen to all the people because every single conversation we can learn from and maybe we can see a motivation to go with them.”

Spurs target Maripan wants Prem move

Monaco central defender and Chile international Guillermo Maripan has spoken of his desire to play in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old joined the Ligue 1 club in a €20million deal (£17.9m) from La Liga side Alaves last summer and Todo Fichajes have outlined interest from Spurs.

"Personally, I have always liked the Premier League a lot," Maripan told Al Aire Libre, via football.london. “I have always wanted to play there, so I am aiming there.”

Tottenham will be hopeful of bolstering their backline this summer with question marks over the long-term future of a number of their current defenders.

Pochettino reveals Emery meeting

Mauricio Pochettino has spoken of his meeting with former Arsenal boss Unai Emery after both were sacked by their respective North London clubs earlier in the campaign.

The two met three times in opposing dugouts during Premier League North London derbies, but they shared a camaraderie - particularly when both were dismissed from their roles in November.

"Before the pandemic, me and Jesus (Perez, Pochettino’s assistant) met with Unai Emery, sharing a coffee. We met to talk and to share our experiences,” Pochettino told a Zoom interview, via football.london.

"We were working in different clubs. We were at the enemy, but we finished at around the same time and then we were taking a coffee and people were walking past and saying 'Unai and Pochettino and Jesus are now sharing a coffee!'

"It was in Cockfosters, very close to Arsenal and Tottenham’s training grounds. It was very funny."
