Tottenham morning headlines as Man United beat Spurs to transfer and Eric Dier claim made

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Monday, May 4.

Japhet Tanganga hoping for England call-up

Tottenham’s 21-year-old defender Japhet Tanganga is aiming to be capped for England at senior level in the near future.

In a wide-ranging interview , Tanganga said he thinks international recognition is an attainable goal given Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori has already been given his first cap.

“One of my goals is to get capped at senior level for England. Fikayo has done that and now I'm in a similar position,” he said.

“I see it as an opportunity and an example to follow and hopefully one day I can get capped and achieve one of my goals.”

Tanganga has impressed under new manager Jose Mourinho, making six Premier League appearances so far. By comparison Tomori, who is 15 months older than the Spurs man, has played 15 league games for Chelsea this season.

Danny Mills thinks Eric Dier can play a big role when Jan Vertonghen leaves

Former right-back and pundit Danny Mills believes that Eric Dier will be needed to fill in at centre-back if Jan Vertonghen departs the club this summer.

The Belgian defender is reportedly unlikely to sign a new deal, while Dier is about to begin talks on a contract extension.

And while Dier hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts to life under Mourinho, Mills thinks the England international will become a more important player once Tottenham lose a key defender.

“It benefits him that he is a utility player,” he told Football Insider . “He has experience in those positions.

“If they are going to lose Vertonghen, without a shadow of a doubt, you need somebody that can slot in when and needs be.

“Inevitably he will be a squad player and play 20 odd games a season and he will benefit from Mourinho liking to play defensively.”

The 2020/21 Premier League season could be played behind closed doors

Fan might not be able to attend a game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the 2021/22 season.

Premier League clubs are preparing for the possibility that stadiums will be empty throughout 2020/21 , given that many experts believe a vaccine will not be ready for at least another 12 months.

The league’s ‘Project Restart’ already acknowledges that the remaining fixtures of the 2019/20 season will have to be played behind closed doors, but now there are fears this protocol will be extended for a long time to come.

That would have huge financial ramifications for every club, given that match day earnings are an important revenue stream.

Manchester United beat Spurs to transfer

According to The MEN, Manchester United are close to signing Sunderland youngster Joe Hugill.

The report claims United have been working on a £300,000 move for Hugill, 16, in recent months and fought off competition from Tottenham, Arsenal, Wolves, and Leeds.

German clubs also expressed interest in Hugill, although he did not receive an offer from any Bundesliga clubs.
