Tottenham morning headlines as Jose Mourinho plots Kurt Zouma move and £175m loan deal revealed

Here are the Spurs morning headlines on Friday, June 5.

Mourinho asks Spurs to pursue Chelsea star - report

Jose Mourinho would like Tottenham to make a move for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma when the 2019/20 campaign is concluded, per RMC Sport.

The French centre-back has made 33 appearances for the Blues this season but has been rotated in and out of the starting XI with Frank Lampard not able to settle on an undisputed first-choice defensive pairing at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs will be in the market for a new centre-back this summer and Mourinho has, according to the French outlet, included Zouma on a list of five potential players he would like Tottenham to target.

Spurs take out £175million loan

Tottenham have borrowed £175m from the Bank of England in order to ease the pressure on the club’s finances brought on by the coronavirus crisis.

All football in the UK was suspended in March due to the global pandemic and even though the Premier League will resume on June 17, it will do so without supporters in attendance with large gatherings still banned.

That has also impacted several live events which were planned to be held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and that loss of revenue, coupled with behind closed doors matches and a broadcast rebate, means Spurs face a loss of more than £200m for the period until 2021.

Which is why Spurs have taken advantage of the government's Covid Corporate Financing Facility (CCFF) to help them through this difficult period.

Smith: Vertonghen situation won’t bother Mourinho

Jose Mourinho will not be concerned about Jan Vertonghen’s availability when the Premier League campaign resumes, according to former Arsenal forward and Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith.

The Belgian centre-back’s deal with Spurs expires at the end of this month and it is not yet clear if he will see out the rest of the 2019/20 campaign.

Vertonghen has made 26 appearances for Tottenham this term and has even captained the side under Mourinho. However, Smith says the Portuguese coach will not be worried should the 33-year-old decide to become a free agent on July 1.

He told the Football Show: "Vertonghen is 33 years of age and his best form is behind him. We saw that in the latter stages of this season so Jose Mourinho won't be overly fussed if he's not available and if his mind is elsewhere.

"We've got to think that most of these players who are out of contract, certainly the most attractive ones to other clubs, they'll have half an idea at least over where they're going to go and who's interested.”
