Tottenham morning headlines as Jose Mourinho 'open' to Gareth Bale move, Rhian Brewster eyed

Here are the Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Thursday, August 20.

Mourinho ‘open’ to Bale move

Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho would be willing to bring Gareth Bale back to the club, according to ElEspanol.

Bale’s Real Madrid future is up in the air with the Welshman having fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane.

Bale has helped Los Blancos to two La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues since joining the Spanish giants from Spurs in an £86million move in 2013.

Mourinho, who tried to sign Bale during his time in charge of Manchester United, is reportedly keen to sign the 31-year-old, but the winger’s £350,000-a-week wages would be a major stumbling block.

The verdict on Joe Hart to Tottenham

Bale was not included in Zidane’s matchday squad for Real’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Manchester City earlier this month while he has drawn criticism for looking visibly disinterested as a substitute during La Liga games post-lockdown.

Spurs face fight to sign Reds youngster

Spurs are one of several clubs said to be interested in signing Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster.

However, as per Football Insider, they face an uphill battle with the Reds reluctant to allow the 20-year-old to join a top-six rival.

Brewster is hot property this summer following an impressive loan spell at Swansea City during the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, scoring 11 goals in 22 games.

As per the BBC, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Burnley, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Fulham are also interested in the England under-21 international.

Transfer window rule can help with Tottenham’s hectic schedule

The extended nature of this summer’s transfer window may work in Mourinho’s favour as the Spurs boss prepares his squad for a hectic start to the new season.

Tottenham get their Premier League campaign underway on the weekend of September 11/12/13, and also begin their Europa League qualifying journey on September 17.

In addition, Spurs will also be in Carabao Cup action that same month.

However, while Mourinho faces the prospect of twice having two games in the space of 48 hours, the October 5 transfer window deadline will allow the coach to hold on to some of his fringe players during the first month of the season.

As such, Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, Kazaiah Sterling, Anthony Georgiou, George Marsh, Jack Roles and Jack Clarke - all of whom could be sent out on loan - may play their part during the opening weeks of the season.
