Tottenham morning headlines as agent makes Gareth Bale revelation, Joe Rodon strengths analysed

Here are your Tottenham Hotspur morning headlines for Friday, 9 October.

Rodon would be a shrewd Spurs signing - Bent

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has backed the club’s proposed move for Swansea City defender Joe Rodon.

On Monday, Sky Sports claimed that Spurs were in talks with Swansea to sign the 22-year-old centre-back for a fee between £7million and £18m.

Rodon featured for Wales on Thursday as they lost 3-0 to England at Wembley.

“For me, he would be a very shrewd signing if they were to go and get him,” Bent told Football Insider.

“But at the same time, if they don’t get him I think they’ll be very happy with what they’ve done in the transfer market.”

Bale’s agent criticises Spanish and British press

Gareth Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett has aimed a dig at the press in both Spain and England following the Welshman’s return to Tottenham Hotspur.

Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan from Real Madrid having fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

And after revealing that Bale turned down other offers before returning to Spurs, Barnett offered a withering appraisal of recent press coverage of the 31-year-old.

"The press on both sides...more so in Spain but here as well, they really look to knock the superstars down and Gareth was an example of it," Barnett told talkSPORT.

"Instead of saying how great Gareth is, they come out with the most ridiculous statements ever.

"Things like 'he is suffering because he can't speak Spanish. That's written by someone who knows nothing because he does speak Spanish.

"All these little things without checking facts, it's disgraceful.”

How Rodon compares to Spurs centre-backs

Spurs target Rodon is comfortably ahead of current Tottenham centre-back pairing Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier in three key areas.

Rodon, 22, boasts impressive stats in aerial duels (5.3), interceptions per game (2.3) and blocks made (1.3), comfortably surpassing the numbers posted by Sanchez and Dier, as per data provided by WhoScored.

And while Rodon’s pass completion of 81% pales in comparison to Jose Mourinho’s preferred duo, his 6ft 4in frame and ability to dominate attackers make him an attractive proposition for Spurs.

The club has until October 16 to complete signings from the Football League.
