Tottenham mark homecoming with win as Son Heung-min steps up again to kick off the party

Hearts rose into a few mouths here as Michy Batshuayi curled an effort around Hugo Lloris early in the second half.

Like Wilfried Zaha early in the first half and the sudden burst of snow before the pre-match opening ceremony, the strike - which ultimately flew wide - was among a number of things threatening to wreck the party at the new and vastly improved White Hart Lane.

Some might say that Wynne Evans - the bloke from the Go Compare ads - and the decision to have him belt out a rendition of ‘Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur’ as both sets of players stood bemused prior to kick-off, did just that.

So thank goodness for the ever-reliable Son Heung-min whose goal, nine minutes after the break, became the first official strike at the new stadium and enabled Spurs to enjoy their own party.

Tottenham open new stadium with spectacular ceremony - but fans slam 'embarrassing' show

They’d put so much into their homecoming with the countdown to kick-off and the decisive strike demonstrating just how formidable the wall of sound that is the south stand could be.

With Ole losing control of the wheel to leave Manchester United in fifth, twenty-four hours earlier, Spurs fans won’t worry too much about the quality of this performance.

They’ll be more focused on celebrating being back in third and back at their new home.
