Tottenham manager news: Tim Sherwood makes case for Ryan Mason hire after ‘trophy managers’ failure

Tim Sherwood is banging the drum for Ryan Mason to be appointed as Tottenham’s next permanent manager after making an impact in his first game back in temporary charge.

Mason, who is now in his second stint as Spurs caretaker after Cristian Stellini was sacked following a short spell after Antonio Conte’s departure, has thrown his hat into the ring for the long-term job.

The former midfielder certainly got a tune out of his players in Thursday night’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United. Trailing 2-0 at half-time after a poor performance, Mason’s team talk motivated Spurs to fight back and earn a point through Pedro Porro and Heung-min Son’s goals.

And Sherwood, a former Spurs boss himself, has questioned why the club would appoint a big-name ‘trophy’ manager when Mason has proved he could do a good job.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “It was really important last night they showed the pride, and they did that certainly in the second half.

“It was probably a really difficult team talk for Ryan at half-time, but he was up to it. They came out, they played for the badge and that’s all the fans ask of them.

“I listened to a clip there, ‘why shouldn’t it be Ryan Mason?’. Well, why shouldn’t it be?

“We’ve had Conte, we’ve had Jose Mourinho, they’re the trophy managers and what did they do? So you could do a lot worse.”

Former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann remains the bookmakers’ favourite to take over in the summer, but Mason could propel his own name into the frame if Spurs can push for an unlikely top-four finish in their final five games of the season.
