Tottenham man of the match results for Man City win as Japhet Tanganga and Lucas Moura shine

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo started his new job in perfect fashion on Sunday afternoon as he led his side to a 1-0 victory over Premier League champions Manchester City.

Spurs won by the single goal, thanks to a fine strike from Son Heung-min in the second-half.

The north London side showed great grit and determination to continue their fine home record against Pep Guardiola 's men and produce somewhat of a shock on the opening weekend of the new 2021/22 Premier League season.

There were some standout performers for Spurs on the day in N17, but none more so than defender Japhet Tanganga.

The 22-year-old Tottenham academy graduate had the difficult task of marking Raheem Sterling, and then sometimes Jack Grealish, with City very fluid in attack.

However, Tanganga stuck to his task very well and showed his aggression against the England duo - something they couldn't get to grips with.

Lucas Moura was also a standout performer in Espirito Santo 's first match in charge, with the former Paris Saint-Germain attacker often showcasing his dribbling talent and helping the hosts get up the pitch in some difficult moments of the game.

Despite Moura's excellent display, Tanganga was voted as man of the match in a survey conducted by football.london .

Tanganga recorded a whopping 64.1% of your votes, with Lucas coming in second with 20.2% of the voting.

The Spurs defender revealed after the game that he had a plan in place to deal with Sterling and went into detail about how he executed this.

"I think I had my tactics. In the nicest way possible, Raheem was away with England and he did so well with England," he told Spurs TV after the 1-0 win.

"So you know he needed some time off, but I knew coming into this game I had six weeks of preparations and he maybe had less.

"I knew I had to go after him to make sure he didn't grow into the game. Not only me but the team recognised that and, like I said, it paid off and we got the three points."

Next up for Spurs in the Premier League is a trip to Molineux on Sunday afternoon to face Espirito Santo's former club Wolves.
