Tottenham make transfer decision on Euro hero Fernando Llorente's future

Fernando Llorente is set to leave Tottenham this summer - regardless of whether he helps them win the Champions League - as the deadline to extend his contract has now passed.

The north Londoners could have kept the 34-year-old striker at the club for another 12 months, but needed to trigger the extra year by last Saturday.

It means that, barring a U-turn, the Champions League Final against Liverpool on June 1 will be the last game of Spain international Llorente’s two-year stay in the capital.

Italian duo AC Milan and Roma, Spain's Valencia and Marseille of France are interested in him.

Former Athletic Bilbao and Juventus frontman Llorente was signed from Swansea in 2017 as a back-up to England star Harry Kane. He has scored a total of 13 goals for Tottenham in his time at the club, but only two of them have come in the Premier League, where he has made seven starts.

It was Llorente's crucial, though fortuitous goal in the quarter-final second-leg win away to Manchester City that sealed a place for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in Madrid next month.

He also helped to change the game when he came on at half-time during Spurs' epic 3-2 comeback win in Ajax in the second leg of their semi-final.

Pochettino wants to break up his squad in the summer, however.

The Tottenham boss wants a younger striker as cover for Kane, with Celta Vigo’s Maxi Gomez an option.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international, who scored 13 league goals this season for a side who were fighting relegation, would cost £17million.

New rules adopted by UEFA mean Tottenham and Liverpool will be allowed to name 12 potential substitutes a week on Saturday, rather than the usual seven. Should the game go to extra time, Pochettino and opposite number Jurgen Klopp will be able to make an fourth substitution.
