Tottenham make really classy gesture to Marine after FA Cup victory

Tottenham have explained why they did not immediately swap shirts with non-league outfit Marine after the FA Cup third-round clash.

Jose Mourinho's Carabao Cup finalists travelled to Merseyside for the biggest David vs Goliath clash in the competitions history, with 161 league positions separating the two teams.

An upset was not on the cards though, as a first-half hat-trick from Carlos Vinicius was added to by Lucas Moura and teenager Alfie Devine.

Nevertheless, it was a once in a lifetime occasion for Marine and their players, with stories that will be told for generations after their remarkable run in the competition.

In clashes between bigger clubs and minnows in the competition, it is customary to swap shirts after the game - with the players able to secure a souvenir to cherish.

Unfortunately, due to the current coronavirus pandemic, things aren't as they usually are and this led to different scenes after Sunday's match.

Taking to social media, Tottenham said: "The players are unable to swap shirts after the game due to COVID protocols, so we've provided Marine AFC with a whole set of fresh match shirts as a souvenir of today's historic match."

That approach has earned the respect of supporters, with the gift certain to be welcomed by the Merseyside outfit.

However, some have been left confused as Aston Villa's young players swapped shirts with Liverpool in Friday's FA Cup clash.
