Tottenham make major new Champions League squad change after injury setback

Tottenham have added Mathys Tel to their Champions League squad, replacing the injured Dominic Solanke.

Tel was left out of Spurs' squad for the league phase of the competition earlier this season, meaning he has played no part in the first five matches.

However, the 20-year-old has now been called up and will be available to face Slavia Prague on Tuesday night.

New UEFA rules allow clubs to replace an injured player in their squad if they can provide evidence that he is on the sidelines for at least 60 days.

Once Solanke is fit again, he can come back into the squad to replace Tel.

Clubs are able to change their squads again ahead of the knockout stages in February.

Solanke has been out since August with an ankle injury and is yet to start a competitive match under head coach Thomas Frank.

No timeframe has been provided for his return and the decision for Spurs to drop him from their Champions League squad suggests he is still a fair way from making a comeback.

Frank said at his pre-Slavia Prague press conference on Monday that there was "definitely some consideration" over bringing Tel into the Champions League squad, with Solanke's absence dragging on longer than expected.

“Ah of course if I knew back then what I know now I maybe would have changed the decision, no doubt about that," Frank said.

"Of course it is something we can have into consideration if you can change one player, what is the timing and when is the other player back? It is also a decision in terms of some of the long-term injuries, when can they be back?

"And we also need players fit and available so we have enough players to shoot with from the bench.”
