Tottenham make Antonio Conte decision amid setback in Mauricio Pochettino return plan

Former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is in talks to become Tottenham Hotspur's new head coach, according to reports.

Spurs have been on the hunt for a new boss since sacking Jose Mourinho in mid-April and have struggled to lay their hands on a desired target despite their best efforts.

In the last few days, Spurs have been speaking with former boss Mauricio Pochettino about a sensational return to north London, but the prospect of that happening remains unclear, despite Pochettino telling Paris Saint-Germain that he wants to leave the club and seal a return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

football.london understands that Pochettino informed PSG's hierarchy of his desire to leave the club last week, but the situation still remains very much the same, with Spurs still facing a tough challenge to lure him away.

However, multiple reports from Italy now say that Spurs have 'contacted' Conte about the prospect of making a return to the Premier League and filling the position left vacant by Mourinho several weeks ago.

According to Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are currently in talks with Conte over the project, his contract and salary.

Conte is currently out of work after leaving Inter Milan last week, but could be set for a swift return to the dugout if Spurs manage to thrash out terms with the lively Italian.

Back in November, Conte admitted that he would like to relish the challenge of managing in England again after the success he enjoyed during his two-year spell in charge of Chelsea between 2016 and 2018.

The former Inter boss said: “I have this season and another year of my contract at Inter.

“I started a project here, and, honestly, I want to continue this project and stay for many years because we are building the bases.

“But, for sure, in my future, I want to come back to England to have another experience because I enjoyed my stay there a lot and to breathe the atmosphere in England.

“For me, for my family, I’d like to one day come back to England because we lived an incredible experience and we want to continue to have another experience in England."

Considering Conte is currently available, it would make sense for Spurs owner Daniel Levy to appoint the 51-year-old as Mourinho's successor, as it would not require compensation to be paid to another club, as would be the case if he was to continuing pursuing a move for Pochettino to make his return.
