Tottenham 'looked at' transfer for Chelsea's Olivier Giroud after phone call interest

Tottenham spoke to Chelsea's Olivier Giroud in January when it looked as if he would quit the Blues.

The World Cup winner struggled for first team opportunities during the first half of the season.

Giroud's departure would've been sealed at the start of the year had Frank Lampard been able to secure a replacement.

Inter Milan, led by former Blues boss Antonio Conte, were touted as the striker's next destination but he has confirmed that contact was made by Tottenham as they considered dealing with their rivals.

“Everyone knows that the sporting project of Inter was the most interesting for me,” he told  Teléfoot.

“Lazio and Tottenham also looked for me. At one point, it was a question of where I wanted to go to play. I spoke to Conte on the phone.”

Tottenham lost Harry Kane on New Year's Day after he hobbled off during their defeat at Southampton.

Their lack of back-up for the English striker has long been criticised and Jose Mourinho has paid the price for a lack of alternatives.

Giroud ended up staying at Stamford Bridge and scored a vital goal against the north London outfit when Chelsea won a crunch match back in February.

The 33-year-old also netted in his club's last outing when they stuck four past Everton.

Giroud's contract is up in the summer which means Tottenham could return and seal the player's signature for nothing.

But after seeking a move to pastures new as he grew frustrated over a lack of game time the former Arsenal player admits he could now prolong his stay at Stamford Bridge.

"Yes. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Of course," he replied when asked whether he wanted to remain in west London.

"There are a few months to go, games to win and maybe another trophy, and after, you know, I think I have two [or] three nice seasons in front of me.

"It’s not the time to talk about contracts and everything but I will take a decision when it comes.”
