Tottenham look to support struggling players with new mental health role

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to recruit a mental health and emotional wellbeing manager to focus on helping the academy (boys and girls) with support they may need as they develop at the football club.

In July 2020, James Bell became the leader of a Performance Psychology and Wellbeing department at Brighton.

Bell, who is the UK Sport's Head of Culture Development and Mental Health, set the department up to focus on the wellbeing of staff and players.

Spurs seem to be going down a similar route with this new role. It will be based at the training centre and the successful candidate will "drive workforce awareness and development about mental health and embed it into all aspects of the business," as stated in the job advertisement.

After the last 18 months of the coronavirus pandemic, supporting and communicating with one another has become more important than ever.

This management role at the north London club will ensure that there is support within for players when they need it and they will focus on the academy youngsters to help them throughout their time at Spurs.

The job responsibilities also state they want the candidate to "coordinate and oversee the operational delivery of the mental health strategy and action plan."

Whoever takes on the new role will need to have experience and show commitment to working with children and their wellbeing.

The Lilywhites are also looking for someone who can be empathetic and a positive influence.

Although mental health is important at all levels and ages, starting with the academy boys and girls will mean they have the support from a young age, which will hopefully help to prevent any who struggle with mental health along the line.
