Summer signing Tanguy Ndombele broke the deadlock after a strong start from the vistors but Spurs were immediately put on the back foot when Serge Aurier was shown two yellow cards with just 31 minutes on the clock.
Mauricio Pochettino could have been forgiven for thinking that the gods were against him and his team when captain Hugo Lloris inexplicability attempted to turn away from Danny Ings next to his goal line and gift Southampton an equaliser.
Harry Kane soon hit back, finishing off a fine team move involving Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen to give Spurs the half-time lead. A nervy second half saw Lloris make amends for his error with two world-class saves as Spurs hung on.
